Three different authors analyze about 50 online tournament hands each, and then 20 more hands are analyzed where they each give their independent opinion. That’s in short the content / structure of this new book.
We start out with Pearljammer, who is fairly tight / conservative, who makes small preflop raises, and who thinks about the game well. (In fact, all three do – they are each proven Internet champions.)
The contributions by Rizen are also well-written, accurate, and he plans ahead in a hand very well (hand 77). Good analysis of what small bets in big pots could mean, of the meaning of minimum reraises (hand 84), and of the types of boards that some people often like to check-raise bluff on (meaning that with marginal hands that are not good enough to call such a check-raise, you should often check back on these types of boards).
Apestyles is the most aggressive of the three, the one who makes the largest preflop raises, the one who pays the most attention to gameflow, and who is also very strong on an analytical level. (Hand 100: Good analysis of timing tells in relation to hand strength, taking into account stack sizes plus minimizing losses & maximizing wins – all in one hand. Also good: Hand 111; a decent analysis of JJ against a raise. Hand 113, another JJ hand, where he exploits an opponent’s playing tendencies, choosing the best way to play these jacks after the fairly difficult / marginal flop K♥T♦4♥. And finally hand 117; the play of a marginal hand, Q4, out of the big blind in a blinds only pot. Good reasoning why it is not good to fire again after the turn K after having been check-called on a flop K♦9♥6♥, and also a good analysis why after the river Q a thin reraise against the opponent’s 33% of pot river bet is better than the ‘standard’ flatcall.)
A few points of criticism:
- Online stats on opponents (VP$IP, PFR% etc.) are never used – even though most players will use them to guide their decisions.
- Because of the structure of the book, there is no real ‘tournament flow’ like for instance the Gus Hansen book. However, because the authors still provide extensive circumstantial factors in every hand, this is only a minor issue.
- There are almost no hands in the book from the small blind & big blind – even though in tournaments they are often the most difficult & therefore most interesting.
- There is no “analysis afterwards” – once the final results are shown, the hand is over instead of looking back to see what could have been done better / whether or not the decisions had actually made sense.
All in all, a good book – with well over 400 pages that may not always be very spectacular, but still of high enough quality to warrant its purchase.
