The name Gary Carson was well known to a lot of people way before he wrote this book, or even before he wrote some articles for various sites and magazines. The main reason: His active participation at Rec.Gambling.Poker (RGP), the popular poker community / newsgroup on the Internet. Fortunately for those who don’t like Mr. Carson’s often negative and sarcastic, yes sometimes even plain hostile contributions over there, the tone of this book is much more pleasant and even friendly at times, and the author seems to have a genuine interest to try to improve the reader’s game.
And I have to say that I like his book, too. It offers excellent advice and meaningful additions to what other poker authors have written. His analysis of extra outs, of delaying one’s actions until the turn with hands like top pair in very loose and very aggressive games, and his extension of Morton’s Theorem (meaning that in multiway pots it is often the best draw that has the most value and that gains the most by raising, rather than the current best hand) are all excellent concepts. Also, Mr. Carson covers as many subjects as possible and tries to come up with necessary adjustments for all types of games, against all kinds of opponents. All in all, I was well into the “Advanced Concepts” section when I thought to myself: “Gee, finally a new book that tries to dig deeper than most others, and that has the objective to come up with new ideas, rather than reproduce things that others have already written.”
Unfortunately, the last ten chapters or so contain just too much simplistic and even bad advice (Women and Poker, Pot- and No-Limit Poker) to give the book the rating I originally had in mind: an 8. This is also because of Mr. Carson’s relatively loose opening requirements, which can be very dangerous for his most likely target audience: people who are working their way up in limit hold’em, but who don’t have the judgment yet to distinguish between risky-but-profitable and risky-but-unprofitable situations. Also, because in the final chapters of the book he talks almost exclusively about very loose / very aggressive games with often six or seven callers (games like this are very hard to find for stakes that matter, and he gives almost no good recommendations at all on how to beat the more common tight / aggressive games), I decided I could not go that far with my rating. For example, the author seems to neglect the possibility that in a multiway pot with a lot of raising, a six- or seven-high flush draw may not be the best draw and may in fact be almost drawing dead, yet in almost all cases he recommends putting in as many raises as possible. Those who think this is not the proper play, and who claim that if five or six people are raising on a raggedy flop, that then it is not just possible but in fact quite likely that a higher flush draw is present are simply dismissed as playing weak-tight.
All in all, despite these obvious drawbacks, and despite the relatively marginal rating of a 6.5, it should be clear that I do recommend this book – if only for the simple reason that it contains more interesting thoughts and ideas than almost any poker book that has recently been published.
