The first set of DVD’s in the expert Hold’em series. (I have produced the second set of DVD’s myself, and if I’m not mistaken the third set will be by Byron Jacobs. More information on www.expertholdem.com.) A few general things about this series by Ed. First of all, he seems like a nice and laid-back guy with a genuine interest to help you improve your game. All four shows are sober, i.e., with no frills – it is the information that counts. Because Ed talks very fast and with a slight American accent, especially some of the Europeans whose first language is not English (say, the German, French or Spanish people) may have a little trouble understanding him. This is even more so because he often uses big terms like implied odds very casually as if everybody automatically should understand it – and then he immediately goes on to the next term that is also explained in an “OK, but that should be obvious” manner. And another negative point: When calculating the odds you are getting, for instance when you are in the blinds and face a button raise, Ed rarely if ever mentions the important concept of your call closes the betting. Because in many cases, he simply states something like “You are getting 7-to-1 on your call” when there is also a limper in the pot, meaning the pot could still get reraised behind you. And finally, sometimes the hands that are shown for illustration to go with Ed’s story, don’t always seem to match with them fully. OK, that’s about it for some slight points of criticism –now as to the shows themselves.

Two shows were what I view to be truly excellent, with the good, accurate and insightful information that Ed is known for. An excellent breakdown of preflop equity versus post-flop strategic (dis)advantages, and how your preflop raise based on equity could sometimes lead you to lose some equity post-flop. An excellent section on shorthanded play, and lots of other things that make the box set well worth the money. The only, to me, disappointing show was the one on “adjusting your play”. This show offers nothing more than simple beginner stuff, and on top of that the adjustments are only based on two games: weak-tight and loose-passive games. Now, I doubt that the target audience of this DVD will ever find itself in games as loose / passive, or against lots of people as weak-tight, as described in this show. I had hoped the adjustments in this show would have been made when for tight / aggressive games, and against good players – that would have been more worthwhile and also much more interesting. That adjusting show also has one mistake that has not been spotted at the editing process (or that may have been made at the editing process), when Ed says to bet out with AQ on a KJx flop, but then immediately fold against a check-raise by a weak-tight player “as you could be drawing dead”. Obviously, with the gutshot to the nuts, you can never be drawing dead and thus I am certain Ed would not recommend an instant fold here.
OK, that’s it. Good shows, possibly even the best series of DVD’s to date when it comes to pure quality – yet based on Ed’s abilities as a teacher, I think that they could have been a bit better than they are.
