Barry Greenstein
Ace On The River
$25
       (7.5)
|
An absolutely stunning-looking book: High quality paper, a bunch of superb photos containing almost all of the biggest stars in today’s poker, and strategy advice by one of the most accomplished players nowadays, both in tournaments as well as cash games – plus, all of that for a mere 25 bucks.
Unfortunately, for an “Advanced Poker Guide” there is actually very little advanced information in the book. Nice information, yes. Good information, yes. But advanced – no, not really. On more than one occasion, I started wondering: Who is this book aimed at – what is Mr. Greenstein’s target audience, really? Because amidst all this supposedly advanced advice, there are large pieces of extremely obvious information like in the “Poker On The Internet” section and also in many other chapters, or we suddenly get explanations of what constitutes a semi-bluff (p.195) or a value-bet (p.201). This looks strange for someone who refers to those games that actually make some people an extremely good living as “low-limit” and even “pleasure poker”. Also, for a book that contains so little actual strategic advice, I don’t see the need to include all the tables that can be found in the back of the book (pp. 284-299).
Having said that, I do like the general tone of Mr. Greenstein’s work, and the manner in which he describes both the game itself and his own accomplishments, is simply spot on.
One additional slight point of criticism though. In the pot-limit Omaha section, the author describes the AA62 no suits versus JT98 double-suited as the “worst case” for the aces (p.148). I have heard that statement before. However, as I have already pointed out in one of my articles a couple of years ago, the match-up AAK2 no suits versus T976 double-suited is actually significantly worse. The reason is obvious: the maximum stretch for the medium one-gap rundown. Clearly not a major mistake by any means, but still worth mentioning.
All in all, I am certain that no one will feel disappointed buying this book, even though it could actually have been even better than it is now if it had focused some more on the thought processes that are part of ultra-high stakes play. So, maybe a bit too much somewhat obvious advice I guess, but also a few pearls of wisdom here and there. My favorite quote (p.140): “My gambling training has taught me to be leery of people who are trying to hustle me into doing something they say is good for me, when the only thing I know for sure is that it’s good for them.” This sentence alone is worth the $25 for this book, in my opinion.
