When I started reading this book, I quickly thought: Finally, a truly great book about tournament poker, a book that is comprehensible but still gives a great insight into the mind of an accomplished tournament pro with a proven track record. After all, this book digs deeper than most other tournament books, while the practice hands are insightful and offer advice that is directly applicable at the tables. Having said that, the more I read, the more it became clear that the book suffers from a few minor drawbacks as well. The author focuses on the play of good hands almost exclusively, and at no point puts a play on someone based upon circumstantial factors or situational analysis, i.e., regardless of the quality of his cards. (I expect that part II will fill this gap.) In addition, much of the advice seems to be somewhat straightforward and one-dimensional, with not much room for creativity. Another point is that Mr. Harrington likes to vary the size of the preflop raises, and for a large part the strength of his hand is a deciding factor here. (An example is a hand where he advocates making a raise of three times the big blind holding pocket aces, where he says that with jacks he would have raises four or five times the big blind, because you would want to encourage action with aces but not necessarily with jacks.) This strategy, while good in itself, carries the danger of giving away too much information about the quality of your hand to your opponents. On the other hand, Mr. Harrington has a great analysis of why in some cases it is correct to call with a mere pair of eights even against a large reraise – an analysis that is contrary to common wisdom, but that is clearly correct, especially because of the changed strategies that especially a lot of young no-limit hold’em players employ nowadays. All in all, a very good book, and to tell you the truth I expect even more from part II – because the author has promised he will get into advanced plays here, and come up with more situational analysis than in this first part.
