As was the case with the previous two WPT books, this “In The Money” is again too superficial, with too much white space & outright filler. A book that clearly aims to capitalize on the poker boom, and of course on Antonio’s popularity among up-and-coming young players. While this is not bad in itself, unfortunately not a lot of attention has been paid to what really matters: The quality of the information. There are just too many obvious maxims in this book that have been stated before by many different authors. And there is also too much “See how popular I am, hanging out with my friends and spending money” type of stuff that have no connection with the subtitle “Strategies For Winning Texas Hold’em Cash Games”. Besides, most of the book is about tournaments anyway, however not in a very strategy-like manner. And yet another thing I don’t like: The only examples of hands where Antonio is involved in, are all hands that he actually wins. I would imagine the hands that he loses can have as much – or perhaps more – instructional value.
The problem is that even those times where the author actually focuses on strategy, it seems he just hasn’t paid much attention to the actual text as it has appeared in the book. For instance, page 104 has a bad analysis of an opponent, who had A♣J♣ on a 9♦8♣4♣T♠ board, and who was said to “having not the correct odds to chase his flush draw”. However, it should be clear that against Antonio’s 8♠7♠ he had not just a flush draw, but also an open-ended straight draw and a live ace – for a rather premium draw. It may or may not have been correct for him to call the all-in bet, but the description of the hand that Antonio gave didn’t match with the hand that his opponent actually had. Another thing I disagree with is Antonio’s view on the preferred seat versus a maniac (p. 132). And the chapters on Internet play & Heads Up play are even extremely weak, with no relevant information whatsoever. In fact, the only chapter that I thought had some information that is better than just average, is the chapter on playing the turn. And of course, the DVD with the chip tricks is a nice little bonus – though not a bonus that will improve your hourly rate.
“Why am I so critical?”, you may ask. “After all, this book isn’t any worse than the majority of poker books, is it?” No, that is true – it isn’t any worse. But it isn’t any better, either. And when a player of Esfandiari’s calibre comes out with a book, one expects to find good and insightful thought processes that could help the reader. What one doesn’t expect is a book that knows it will sell many copies anyway, simply because of the picture on the cover, and that therefore has not found it very important to come up with material that really adds something to what’s already out there.
