When I got this book and opened it, my first thought was: “This book is superb. It looks great and is in-depth. In fact, this may well be an absolute masterpiece.” And after reading the first chapter in what was simply called “Basics” yet that had statistical, mathematical and quantitative material that sometimes made the head of even a rather maths-oriented person like myself spin, I thought that the “Mathematics of Poker” would set a new standard for poker literature.
Yet, the more I read, the more disappointed I became. Not because the authors had come up with any bad material. No, quite the contrary, throughout the book the level of information stays extremely high, and the authors show great accuracy in what is without a doubt highly complex material. So, lots of calculations & percentages that are in-depth, but only rarely of use in what really matters: the actual poker playing. Many times, the authors dig into examples about toy games and about simplified two-player games – but often, I was more than a bit disappointed about the practical applicability when it comes to the actual day-in, day-out poker games. Of course, this has a lot to do with things like incomplete information, the fact that poker is a complex game and stuff like that. And without a doubt, this book offers a wealth of information about the mathematical background of specific aspects of successful poker, so quite clearly this book is a must-read for every serious poker player. But after having worked myself through the book within three or four months (all of this to try and digest the highly advanced thought processes to the fullest), I found out that I had learned actually very little that could truly / directly help my game. (Therefore, the chapter in this book that I liked best was probably chapter 21 “A case study: Using game theory”, because here the authors did try to incorporate all the information into a ‘realistic’, real poker game.)
Still, this book is a definite milestone in the history of poker analysis. And once someone can take the concepts out of this book one step further to increase its practical applicability in real-life poker (and also, maybe make things just a little bit easier to understand for those who don’t excel all that much in maths), then undoubtedly Chen & Ankenman will be credited forever for the impressive ground work that they’ve done.
