The Best Hand I Ever Played - 52 winning poker lessons from the world’s greatest players
$15.95
      (6.5)
|
- The layout is good, the book looks nice, and the author has a good writing style.
- Good concept about having the top pros talk about what they conceive to be their best hand ever – and this includes hands that they didn’t even end up winning.
- Despite the fact that the author says about the players in this book: “I like these people. A lot”, he still refers to my fellow countryman Marcel Lüske as the colorful Danish star – on no less than two occasions. (p. 20, p. 128)
- Some of the hands described are not that “good” at all. For instance the Jennifer Harman PLO hand (p. 68) where she raised with aces to $25K and then called the max. (capped) $100K reraise from Doyle Brunson. This was just ABC play, and even an amateur would have known this was the correct course of action. While the hand may have been important to her because she had never played PLO before and because the pot was big, it has nothing to do with the title of this book (great players and their best-ever played hands).
- The analysis of many hands is rather poor. It doesn’t add much to the story that was already told by the pros, and in some cases the author doesn’t seem to understand much of the meaning of the plays and / or the maths behind it. (p.67: “Esfandiari’s 7’s were about a 52-48 favorite over Hansen’s 10-8. By the time Esfandiari had called Hansen’s re-raise and then came over the top with a $330,000 all-in, Hansen was facing a call of $330,000 to $620,000, about 50 percent, which is close to the percentage underdog Hansen was.” This is wrong. In the situation described, Hansen actually had a clear +EV decision: He was getting almost 2-to-1 on his money, while being about even money to win.) The David Williams “rake” piece (p. 165, the analysis by the author) and especially the Amir Vahedi (p. 163) & Scott Fischman (p. 47-48) rake pieces are even flat out awful. In some cases, this is the case for not just the analysis, but also for the hand itself. For instance, in the Scott Fischman & Amir Vahedi hands, both players made decisions that, based on their opponent’s hand, were flat out horrible when analyzing things at the important time – the decision point. Yet, because as it happened the eventual end result meant that they had gotten away with their bad decisions, these two players suddenly view their decisions as good. The fact that the author buys this result-oriented nonsense, and even goes out of his way to showing the good & proper rationale of their (bad!) decisions, means that this book is not nearly as good as it could have been if the author had been more critical.
- This non-critical approach of the author sometimes just makes you say “Aaargh” – because his comments are just plain nonsense. (p. 158 - 159: “Ah yes. The World Series of Poker bracelet. Ulliott won it in the Pot-Limit Hold’em event in 1997. Finally, he had found a place that would let him ante up. Early on, you see, Ulliott couldn’t get a game. No one would play with him. The “Devilguppy”, as it were, was too good.” Those who have read Stewart Reuben’s 24/7 Poker book will take these comments with a grain of salt. Even more so when you see Dave’s analysis of the A♥4♠ versus 77 on a 7♥5♥3♠ flop, where he thinks the top set on the flop would be “barely even money”. This is actually one of the few times where Mr. Rosenbloom’s “The rake” piece makes sense, because he uses this to show the flaws in Ulliot’s reasoning.
All in all, this book is a nice and easy read with occasionally some interesting & insightful hands (the Daniel Negreanu & Chris Moneymaker sections, although in the Moneymaker hand the author’s analysis of Chuc Hoang’s play – Moneymaker’s opponent in this hand – is once again not correct). But it is nowhere as good as it could have been, because the author has not gone into the heads of the players deep enough, and because he has not analyzed things as closely & critically as he should have.
