For a book that according to James Woods is the perfect ‘graduation’ book (back page), I think the Little Green Book lacks a bit substance. Even though the book is a pleasure to read and the author not only discusses a lot of situations but also provides lots of meaningful answers, it is not really an in-depth work. A nice read yes, and yes: I would easily recommend it to all but maybe the absolute top players. I especially like the author’s analysis of bet size & betting patterns.
(Having said that, on page 31, in the “Raise the right amount” section, Gordon recommends smaller preflop raises upfront and larger raises on or near the button. The reasoning: a) you commit fewer chips while out of position, b) a smaller raise from EP encourages opponents to play against you when you hold a powerhouse, c) bigger raises from late position put real pressure on the remaining players to fold and make it harder for the blinds to reraise, and d) when I’m playing in position, there is more money in the pot. In contrast to what the author recommends, I prefer bigger raises up front, to make it harder for people to make a cheap call with a speculative holding while having position on me, and smaller raises on the button – more than anything, because I have the best position already. Also, c) doesn’t hold true IMO against especially the aggressive youngsters nowadays, and d) has the unfortunate habit of making the money more shallow – thus decreasing the effect of your good position to an advantage on just one or two streets instead of on all streets.)
Not a single issue in this book is analyzed in a truly analytical manner, and the book is full of recommendations on what to do in general rather than saying exactly when or giving concrete examples. Despite this serious criticism, the advice given is almost always at a decent or even good level, and I have spotted only one (what I view to be) flagrant error: on page 86 where the author seems to say that a backdoor flush draw will get completed 6.4% of the time. Other than this, the book is much better than I expected – especially after the what I consider rather fluffy first book of this same author, “Poker: The Real Deal”.
