One of the latest 2+2 releases is a good, but not great book. The book is built around the explanation of three important no-limit concepts: the REM Process, the Commitment Threshold and Stack-to-Pot Ratios. As in previous (recent) 2+2 books, also this time the authors have come up with very difficult names for concepts that are not that new actually, and that were already fairly well-known among the majority of the players. However, the authors do a rather good job in analyzing these three aspects, and dig especially deep regarding the stack-to-pot ratios. Especially the “Planning in Practice” section at the end of the book is of very high quality. It shows all the important decisions at the table for instance with regards to the size of the buy-in, or the merits of the weak lead in inducing someone to make a bluff raise.
A few points of criticism:
· Pot control is done a bit too ‘automatically’ for my taste, and is recommended almost as the default play – when in fact I think it is important to take into account the characteristics & exploitable weaknesses of the opponent, rather than “deciding in advance how big you want the pot to be”. Also not taken into account is the occasional huge pot you will lose by giving an expensive free card on the turn. Which doesn’t mean that pot control has no merit, because it does. Yet, it is important to note that it is not a goal in itself, but rather a means to find the proper balance between maximizing wins & minimizing losses against decent opponents.
· The discussion of stack-to-pot ratio’s is good – but focuses too much on preflop play, and not enough on the proper play when you either miss the flop or hit a decent hand like top pair on a very scary board. The discussion should have focused more on a proper integration of preflop & postflop play, in my opinion.
· The REM ace-queen hand on page 131 is a very strange one, as it assumes a situation where a fairly passive player who would make a 10 times the big blind raise with a hand that would be worse than our AQ. (A not very logical assumption.) The recommended play of a minimum reraise, to then fold against an over-the-top raise seems like a very strange one to me, as we would be wasting no less than 20 times the big blind without even seeing the flop – while still not being 100% certain that our hand wasn’t good. Calling, reraising big and especially folding all seemed much better options than the one that was chosen here.
Still, “Professional No-Limit Hold’em” is quite clearly a more than decent book – even though I can’t shake off the feeling that volume 1 and volume 2 could easily have fit in one book rather than two.
